David
Cerulli Studio has
been producing fine art sculptures, paintings and drawings for more
than 30 years. Individual collectors and corporate clients rely on
the creative design solutions and quality workmanship provided by
Cerulli Studio. Whether creating site specific outdoor sculptures,
awards, or two- and/or three-dimensional works of art, each project
is custom designed to meet the client's specific needs and budget.
In collaboration with some of the finest sculpture fabricators and
foundries (including Tallix, Polich Art Works, Dent Mfg.) large
scale works, awards, and limited edition pedestal size sculptures
are
produced by Cerulli Studio. Equally as important as working with the
best fabricators and foundries in producing a
successful design is the client's involvement in the creative
process. Models and drawings are submitted for the client's approval
and as a result of this ongoing collaborative dialogue unique design
solutions are incorporated into each sculpture.
In addition to sculptures, David Cerulli continues to produce paintings, drawings,
and limited edition prints. Primarily known for his abstract works,
Cerulli is currently working on a series of
landscape and seascape
paintings and drawings. Some of these newer works can be viewed by

SCULPTURES
Descriptions of Three Commissions:
"To
Cleave the Sky",
192”
x 192” x 120”, stainless steel and bronze
Commissioned by Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. to celebrate
the 50th Anniversary of the company, this work was designed to
abstractly represent the splitting of the sky or air, which is the basis for the company's
products. The contours and surface textures of the stainless
steel express the flow and swirl of air, while a bronze
tool-like element hovers between the two silver forms as if in
the process of splitting the work in half.
The
outer surfaces of the stainless steel are mirror polished in order
to reflect the sky and surrounding area, while the inner surfaces
are burnished to create a contrasting texture. The bronze element
dividing the stainless forms is polished on the pointed cutting
edge and the handle has a red and brown patina.
"In a
State of
Rejuvenescence", 288” x 240” x
240”, painted aluminum
This
work was designed for the
Lehigh
University
Arts
Center
in
Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania. The design of the sculpture
is an abstraction of a classic image (the Gods and the Muses
dancing) which has been historically used to depict a
celebration of the arts.
The
neutral tan color of the arts center buildings provided an ideal
background for the multicolor sculpture. The five abstract forms
stand on a dark green granite, hexagon shaped base.
"Lipkin Memorial",
78" x 42" x 18", bronze
The Lipkin Memorial was one of the most unusual, interesting and,
ultimately, uplifting commissions produced by David Cerulli. The
husband and wife clients requested a design for a bronze sculpture
to be installed on their gravesite. They hoped that the work would
serve as a lasting symbol of their love for one another, as well as
being a tribute to their many philanthropic contributions to the
creative arts and education. After several meetings in which small
models of the proposed sculpture were presented, a final design was
approved. The sculpture is now permanently installed on their headstone in Easton Cemetery, Easton, Pennsylvania.
PAINTINGS
While looking for
interesting designs found in seashells and other fragments washed up
on beaches and bays, David Cerulli became intrigued by the
surrounding scenes: unusual sand dunes, reeds, grasses, shrubs.
These natural forms were particularly dramatic when combined with
the various colors and shadows created by sunrise and sunset
lighting. Inspired by such scenes he soon began carrying his easel,
paints and sketchbook on artistic outings to various beaches and
bays. Quick renderings were made that served as artistic notes
to be used when producing paintings in the studio. The result is an ongoing group of
paintings called the
"Dunes" series.
While even his most abstract designs are nearly always based on natural forms, the
Dunes series is also a return to the earliest days of his studies
when Cerulli painted scenes directly from nature. This series of
paintings uses motifs and methods learned by working abstractly and
combines these techniques with the ideas found in his earlier, more
representational paintings.
The newest series of paintings (currently in the earliest stages of
production) is the "Parks" series. This ongoing collection of paintings and drawings is inspired by the many parks in and around New York City. Recent paintings from this series can be found on the
LANDSCAPE
PAINTINGS page. Please check back here periodically for more paintings and a new section on the website devoted to sketches and drawings, which will be posted soon.
